November 2, 1930 · Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Before the crown came prayer. Before the throne came devotion. And before the world witnessed her imperial glory, an Ethiopian woman prepared to enter a sacred chapter of history.

On November 2, 1930, Empress Menen Asfaw, known by her baptismal name Wolete Giorgis, was crowned alongside Emperor Haile Selassie I at St. George’s Cathedral in Addis Ababa.

A sacred ceremony

Her coronation was more than a royal celebration. It was a sacred Ethiopian Orthodox ceremony rooted in faith, ancient tradition, spiritual responsibility and divine blessing.

For seven days, senior Ethiopian clergy prepared through prayer and sacred observances. On the eve of the coronation, the imperial family took part in a solemn religious vigil.

During her investiture, Empress Menen received a diamond-and-gold ring symbolizing faith. Her imperial crown was then placed upon her head by Archbishop Abune Kyrillos, accompanied by prayers invoking honor, generosity, mercy, knowledge and wisdom.

Rather than being crowned in a separate ceremony, as was customary for an empress-consort, Empress Menen received her crown during the same church ceremony as her husband, a remarkable moment in Ethiopian imperial history.

A mother, an Empress, a woman of faith

Another extraordinary dimension of this occasion was her motherhood. Empress Menen was carrying new life as she received her imperial crown. On February 27, 1931, she gave birth to Prince Sahle Selassie.

A mother. An Empress. A woman of faith.

Her story reminds us that imperial responsibility was not represented by a crown alone, but also by spiritual devotion, wisdom, service, and the responsibilities of family and nation.

The crowning of Wolete Giorgis remains a remarkable chapter in Ethiopia’s sacred and imperial heritage. On this 96th anniversary of the Great Coronation, let us remember not only the Emperor, but also the Empress who stood beside him.

Long live the history, dignity and legacy of Empress Menen Asfaw.
